Sustainable Jewelry: What it Means to Us

As an artist and a ocean lover, I have been extremely hyper aware of the damage that art materials can cause to the our ecosystem. I always have loved creating but really had a strong feeling that painting was not going to always be my ideal art form.
It felt like I was constantly running through pieces of paper and material; in the back of my head I was thinking how bad this truly is for our environment. I've never been a good student, but I have always been super hardworking. I have always loved designing and sketching.
I wanted to make something different. When I was young, I had always dreamed of making my art into some sort of surf brand. I was always crafting jewelry out of seashells I would find with holes in them, or broken pieces of jewelry. I would take these broken pieces and make them into a completely new, unique piece of jewelry. I would give these pieces a new life.
When I first started Badfish, I was a student studying and found the art of metalsmithing through my college. I started the program, and immediately fell in love with the idea of creating wearable art. I finally felt like my art had a purpose.
I wanted to find something extremely unique to incorporate into my designs. My most sustainable line of jewelry is definitely our Surfite Designs. To summarize, Surfite is the resin that is wasted during the surfboard glassing process; it creates a lot of waste that is typically thrown away but I decided to take this resin, and shape it into stones so we could help reduce the pollution waste that surfboard shaping creates.
Here is our collection of Surfite Jewelry designs and what Surfite is in further detail.

As soon as I realized I could do something with this, I ran with my dream and am still sprinting. I decided over the summer of 2024 I wanted to put my full concentration on Badfish, and I made a huge change in my life. I decided to take my studies to Asia and grow my knowledge in ethically made jewelry making. Since, I have been working on a whole new line of designs and have met some of my biggest inspirations in the short amount of time of my travels.
The whole process of being a young business owner is not all sunshine and rainbows, but it has truly been such an amazing, eye opening life experience and I'm so stoked to see what Badfish can become.
